Joyous Thanksgiving
As you know from our previous post, we missed the first 10 minutes of the service on Sunday morning and I will be honest, it is harder to stay focused on the message when you have a newborn to worry about. So, I can't tell you everything about the message, but I do remember the pastor saying something about "joyous thanksgiving." It is easy for me to get caught up in a "Poor Becky" cycle. My current cycle is that I have to go back to work in February. I know that is not the worst thing that could happen. For many reasons, not just financially, it is not the right thing for Nathan, Jonathan and me. So when I heard the phrase "joyous thanksgiving" I decided to take some time to reflect on what I really do have to be thankful for, and to focus on the positive (this is a post I am going to have to re-visit often to remind myself)....
-a husband who loves me and is so involved in everything with the baby and me
-a happy, healthy, slept 6 hours last night, beautiful baby boy
-my parent's support and the fact that they live just 15 minutes from us
-a family that really loves us and supports us
-friends...from church to school, we have been blessed with the greatest, most supportive and encouraging friends
-a cozy place to live with a new heating system
-hot meals that have been delivered for the past few weeks
-a dog who adjusted well to life with a new baby
-a first year business that has been capable of paying Nathan a salary every month since it started (http://www.encompassbuilders.com/)
-a first year business that has allowed Nathan and me to have more time together than any other time in our relationship
-we are all healthy
-my job...it is fabulous and year round schooling has been a wonderful thing for us
-our only debt is the mortgage on our house
-we love our church (http://www.crossponte.org/)
-we have a Savior who was born for us some 2000 years ago who came to save us all
...now really, I can handle going back to a job that I love when my mom can watch my sweet Jonathan!

Getting to Church
Last week we went to church, so we thought it wouldn't be a problem to go this week. We left the house about 5 minutes late (but that is actually really good for me...although Nathan is on time for things, I just tend to drag him down). I didn't have my make up done, so I decided to do it on my way to church (which is pretty typical). No problem, except that I did not eat breakfast and sweet Nathan packed yogurt for me. I couldn't eat and do my make up, so Nathan proceed to give me a spoonful of yogurt here and there. We managed not to get any on us. Well, poor Jonathan had started eating a bottle before we left and he wasn't done. So Nathan put him in his car seat and propped the bottle up on a blanket. We thought it was pretty good for him to give himself a bottle at 3 1/2 weeks old. I wish I had been able to take a picture, but I was too busy doing my make up!
We finally got to church, but I wasn't finished when we got into the parking lot. I glanced over at Nathan and noticed that he had forgotten to shave. He knew he had an extra razor in the truck, but wasn't sure where it was....we searched in the glove compartment with no luck. Nathan thought it might be in the compartment behind me, so I moved out of the way for him to check, nope! Then he looked in the compartment under me. Yes! He turned it on to find out the batteries were dead. But, prepared Nathan had extra batteries. So, we searched in the compartment behind me again, found them after a few minutes and he shaved. I finished my make up and we were off to church.
We made it into the parking lot at 11:00, but didn't get to our seats until 11:10. Better late than never!!!!!!

Time with Nana
Jonathan enjoyed this past week spending time with his Nana. Nathan's mom enjoyed giving Jonathan a bottle. (Again, I have such a wonderful baby....he took a bottle of breastmilk no problem at all!)
Nana enjoyed baking cookies and banana bread when she was here. Of course, she loved just cuddling her first grandson! She often took the late night shift with Jonathan after he had fed, when he just wanted to look around and not sleep! Fortunately for us, Nana is a night owl.

Check Ups and Life
Jonathan and I both had check ups yesterday.
Jonathan's stats
Birth Weight: 8 lbs. 8 oz.
Going Home Weight: 8 lbs. 4 oz.
Yesterday: 9 lbs.
Our baby is a chunker!
He was 20 inches at birth and is now 21. He is definitely growing...not surprising because the child loves to eat!
At my check up the doctor said my incision looked good and that I could drive. Nathan was very glad for that! I can also go up and down the stairs more often.
I am not sure what I was thinking scheduling 2 appointments before 11:00 am with a newborn, but Nathan's mom is here and she helped me out. We made it to everything on time and even through the Chick-fil-a drive thru without a peep from Jonathan.
Nathan's mom (Nana) arrived on Tuesday afternoon. Although Jonathan is not the first grandchild on Nathan's side of the family, he is the first grandson and will carry on the Ashley family name. Papa is having a hard time not being here with Nana, but they are both coming at the end of December, so he will meet Jonathan soon!
Jonathan slept for 6 1/2 hours last night. Unfortunately, Mommy did not sleep that long. I was so worried that something was wrong, I kept waking up and going to his room to check on him. He was fine! He would have slept longer, but I finally just couldn't stand it and woke him up! Maybe he will do it again tonight and I will be more relaxed!

A New Normal
As our nurse walked us out to the car last Sunday she said "Now you will start your life with a new normal." We are trying to get used to it. Thankfully, Jonathan is a wonderful baby. He eats well and sleeps well. At this point, that is about all we can ask for! He is starting to be more alert and have more awake times...looking around and checking out lights. He really is cute!
On a sad note, Nathan's grandmother passed away last Monday. She had been ill for sometime. Aunt Linda had been lovingly caring for her in her home so that she could be pampered. Nathan flew to Buffalo to be with his family on Wednesday morning and returned home late Friday night. He and his family are doing well. Nathan spoke at her funeral and reminisced about her youthful spirit. When she was in her 80's Nathan rode his motorcycle to the family cottage and jokingly asked his grandma if she wanted to ride. Before he knew what was happening, she had a helmet on and was ready to go! He was proud to say that her first motorcycle ride was with him! We are all comforted because we are confident that she knew the Lord and is home with Him now. She joins Nathan's grandfather who passed away last November.
Jonathan and I stayed at my parents home while Nathan was out of town. Grandma was so excited for Jonathan's first sleepover! She may have gotten more than she bargained for having to be up at night helping with feeds. We also discovered that Jonathan is not a fan of his pack and play. He cried every time we put him in it and never lasted for more than 30 minutes! It was quite frustrating. But, we are back home and he likes his crib, so that is good!
